The viewer feels confronted with the people in the street, as if they about to spill off the canvas and into our space. The brushwork creates a sense of motion, allowing for an aspect of hustle and bustle to be added to the street scene. The artists banded together in 1905 in Dresden and with the goal of promoting an avant-garde artistic style and saw themselves as an avant-garde group that bridged the gap between the classical past and their perception of art of the future. In 1913, several months before Kirchner painted Street, Berlin, the group formally dissolved due to artistic differences and disagreements about the direction of the group. From then on, he committed himself to art. The tilting downward of the perspective and the opposing diagonals in the brushwork create distortion and a sense of motion. The painting shows Kirchner dressed in a uniform but instead of standing on a battlefield or another military context , he is standing in his studio with an amputated, bloody arm and a nude model behind him. The woman on the left wears a purple dress, a pop of color which contrasts with the mostly black clothing of the men that surround the pair. Here, the perspective is skewed, a clear rejection of his previous study of architecture. Today he is remembered as the tortured soul who created some beautiful art before leaving the world too soon. However, he was soon declared unfit for service due to issues with his general health, and was sent away to recover.
