Will Jacob be able to save himself this time? I wanted to care but it was a bit of a struggle. I was disappointed, and I haven't decided yet wether or not to continue with the series. Like Jacob definitely sleeps around this is firmly eluded to but he's definitely in love with a shape-shifter fox. Soon after Will arrives, he is attacked and clawed by the , a race much like humans, but have skin of stone. If notability cannot be established, the article is likely to be , , or. He views family and friends as a burden, and prefers a life where the consequences of his actions do not harm those he loves. The book is set in Mirrorworld, a fairy-tale land that's turning increasingly Earthlike due to technological advancements and the ambitions of a royal dynasty attempting to consolidate power.

Just because he is the younger sibling, doesn't mean he needs to be treated like a two year old, when he is, in fact, graduated from high school. During the late 1980s and the 1990s, Funke established herself in Germany with two children's series, namely the fantasy-oriented Gespensterjäger Ghosthunters and the Die wilden Hühner line of books. As she does this, Will is released, completely human again, and he embraces Clara. I always read books in their original language if I can, but although German is my mother tongue, I usually don't find German authors appealing classics aside. It's stuffed with fairy tale references too. At first, I thought it was a middle-grade book, because the syntax and word choice feels a little young to me; however, it quickly became apparent that this book is far from middle-grade, and the syntax is probably more a result of translation than anything else.

Retold fairy tales tend to be funny retellings with spunky heroines overcoming obstacles with help from magical animals, and meeting cute with their prince in disguise, or reformed thief. People pay him for his talent to get a hold of the rarest and most precious wonders, even the empress of Austry. In future novels, Funke plans to include fairy tales from other cultures such as Spain, France and Russia. And it's not just her impeccable way of showing the beauty of the German language but also her very own illustrations that are a feast for the eyes! It's not a re-written fairy tale but a new tale of love, adventure and danger in a land of magic, where the tales we thought we knew like the back of our hand have a life of their own. As the years went by Jacob finds a new home and friends in the strange, dangerous Mirrorworld and is now a renowned hunter of treasures. I strongly believe this is largely down to the translation. I liked the very real sense of how much was at stake.

At least they had something that defined them however basic. It's not for everyone--I'm not even sure if it's for me. Jacob presses his hand against the glass to obscure his face, and finds himself in an abandoned tower, standing in front of an identical mirror. Clara races to Will's house, only to discover the secret of the mirror herself. Hentzau, the Goyl King's right-hand man, departs to find him. I had to double check that it wasn't mistakenly marked as the first in a series as the reader is thrown into the story with absolutely no exposition or back story. I had no idea what to expect from this but I reeeeally liked it.

This is the first in the Mirror World series. The first fifty pages of this were a struggle. As soon as Jacob returns, he leads them to the roses which Will must smell to send him to sleep. Finding a note containing cryptic instructions, Jacob presses his hand against the glass to obscure his face. Unless Jacob can find a way to save them. The only connection: they both write or at least started with children's books.

Jacob and Valiant decide to leave Clara and Fox behind. The Goyl Soldiers are told how to cross the unicorn boundary by Valiant, ambush them and shoot Jacob. Then there were familiar fairy tale characters like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty who was still sleeping because her prince never came for her. This means that the reader doesn't care for him, and I couldn't give a rats ass weather he is saved or not. He touches her and says her true name, which turns her into a tree. I had to double check that it wasn't mistakenly marked as the first in a series as the reader is thrown into the story with absolutely no exposition or back story. Funke is best known for her originally in German: Tintenwelt-Trilogie , published in the United Kingdom between 2004—2008.

Twelve years after Jacob finds his way through the mirror, Jacob's brother Will finally follows Jacob into the Mirrorworld. Jacob, a now calamity-hardened treasure hunter, along with his vixen Fox a woman who shape shifts , must risk everything to find a way to save his brother's life. Jacob feels like a gallant hero, but you also see the vulnerable young man underneath. Reckless is a great book; though, she should have put more information between the relationships of Jacob and his friends on a personal level. However, one day 12 years later Will discovers his secret, follows him. Soon after Will arrives, he is attacked and scratched by a Goyl, a humanoid race with stone skin.

This world is referred to by Jacob as the Mirrorworld. So I can't I had no idea what to expect from this but I reeeeally liked it. Personally, I highly enjoy this aspect of the Reckless series, as it adds a clever twist and a deeper layer to the world. Funke loved the idea so much she asked Wingram if she could turn it into a novel; he agreed, but requested that he be involved in the creative process. Their daughter, Anna, was born in 1989 and soon after their son, Ben, was born in 1994. He plans to use this ball to trap Will, so that he could be returned to his human form. Two months later, her husband died of cancer they had no idea he had it.
